Dave Pries is one of our regular Modified racers here at Shadyhill Speedway. Dave’s wife Kim has worked at the track for many years and is a big help. Dave is 81 years young and racing in the fastest class. Throughout his career he has raced motorcycles, dragsters, asphalt stock car, and now dirt.
Shadyhill Speedway: When did you realize that you wanted to be a race car driver?
Dave Pries: It was 1958 and it just seemed like a good idea. I started racing at O’Hare Stadium.
Shadyhill Speedway: When and how did you pick your racing #D27?
Dave: It was my call number at work.
Shadyhill Speedway: Where did you and your wife Kim go on your first date?
Dave: The year was 1984 and we went swimming in Lafayette.
Shadyhill Speedway: What other tracks do you tour at?
Dave: I used to go to Florida but now we go to the Iowa Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa for the last 22 years. I have toured over 120 different racetracks around the nation.
Shadyhill Speedway: Favorite racing memory?
Dave: I won the Dealers Choice IMCA two times in Open Modified at Butler, Michigan.
Shadyhill Speedway: What was your day job before you retired?
Dave: I was a road mechanic for a paving company.
Shadyhill Speedway: Elvis Presley, love him or hate him?
Dave: I like him. I am big Chuck Berry fan!
Shadyhill Speedway: What is your favorite movie?
Dave: Miracle on 34thStreet in black and white.
Shadyhill Speedway: What advice would you give to younger racers?
Dave: Keep the belts tight!
Shadyhill Speedway: Have you been in a bad crash?
Dave: Yes, in Butler, Michigan. I went off the track in turn 4 hitting the barrels. Thankfully I walked away.
Shadyhill Speedway: What is your secret on landing such a young wife?
Dave: Be a nice guy and tell her “You don’t have to work.”
Shadyhill Speedway: What are your racing goals for 2020?
Dave: Don’t get hurt!!!
